Residencies:

In January 2009, Namibian artist Kaleb Haipinge departed to Berlin for a 2-month residency at the BBK workshops, followed by Namibian artist Cristina Salvoldi (4 months) in March.

In May the 2nd round of artists were selected by our international jury. They are: Shiya Karuseb, Barbara Boehlke, Abniel Enkali and Paul Kiddo who were selected for the BBK residencies, while Joba Jonathan has been selected for the 12-month residency at the Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien. Karuseb, Boehlke and Jonathan took up their residencies in Berlin during 2009.

In March Berlin artist Simone Haack took up her 2-month residency in Namibia, on the artist farm Peperkorrel of local artists Doerte and Volker Berner.

Exhibitions:

In conjunction with the residency program, p.art.ners has organized a group exhibition in Berlin (Namibia³) and has organized the participation of some of the residency artists in the exhibition “Bilder aus dem suedlichen Afrika” in Eschborn at the head offices of the GTZ. The Kolmanskop photographs by award-winning Namibian photographer Helga Kohl were exhibited in Dresden (Feuerwache) and at the Mineralogisches Institut Universitaet Wuerzburg. Jost Kirsten held a solo exhibition (Rodung) in August at the Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien, as part of his 12-month residency there, and participated in the Terra Nova Exhibition at the Galerie Wedding. During his stay Jost Kirsten had the opportunity to participate in 7 group exhibitions. Kaleb Haipinge exhibited the results of his p.art.ners residency in June in Windhoek (Revolutionary Art).

Workshops:

In March Simone Haack, resident artist from Berlin, presented a one-week portraiture workshop to UNAM students. (supported by the Embassy of Germany and Bank Windhoek)

p.art.ners has also supported the Tulipamwe International Artist Workshop, by donating a return flight to Namibia for Berlin artist Leslie Huppert.

During their residencies in Berlin Namibian artists have presented several workshops and/or talks about Namibian art at Berlin schools.

Film:

In February the three winning films of the Short-Film competition were screened in Berlin during the Berlinale Film Festival. (supported by the Namibian Embassy in Berlin). Tim Huebschle, the overall winner of the competition was present as guest of honour. He also attended the Berlinale on invitation of p.art.ners. Joel Haikali was invited to the prestigious Talent Campus of the Berlinale on the basis of his film differences, which was produced for the “shared experiences” short-film competition and funded by p.art.ners. In April p.art.ners celebrated the premiere of the results of the short-film competition at the Wild Cinema Film Festival and we were excited that all three short films received awards at the Namibian Film Awards.

In July 11 young Berlin dancers joined their Namibian counterparts from the Ombetja Yehinga Organisation for an intensive dance workshop under the choreographer Philippe Talavera and produced a dance show which was shown at the NTN, DHPS and David Bezuidenhout School.

Design:

Two Berlin fashion designers (Beatrice Nickel & Henriette Bartsch) displayed the results of their 6-month residency (Aug 08-Jan 09 in cooperation with UNAM) at a fashion show at the Warehouse Theatre in February.

In July, two German product designers (Steffi Zoeller & Benjamin Haubold) started their 3-month residency in Windhoek, where they worked together with the College of the Arts Product Design Department on different projects. The results were exhibited at the end of their stay at the COTA End of Year exhibition in the National Art Gallery.

In October, p.art.ners in cooperation with Messe Berlin and the Namibia Chamber of Commerce, has invited the Namibian design association Pambili Association to present fashion and jewelry ranges from different Namibian producers and designers at the Import Shop Berlin (a fair presenting design and craft from all countries to international dealers). This has lead to many sales and new contacts to European dealers for the future. P.art.ners and Messe Berlin have provided the stand at the fair, air ticket and accommodation.

p.art.ners in conjunction with EPIZ (Global Information Centre, Berlin) and the Ministry of Education: Khomas Region, have initiated school partnerships between five Windhoek and Berlin Schools. While representatives from Epiz came to Namibia in June to visit the schools, present workshops and prepare the partnerships, 13 Windhoek teachers, headmasters and representatives from the Ministry of Education were invited on a 2 week visit to Berlin to meet with the partner schools and participate in workshops.

Theatre:

In February two representatives from Avalon Event spent 3 weeks in Berlin at the Grips Theatre to work on and prepare the production of the Namibian adaptation of the Linie 1 Grips musical, entitled: Friends 4eva.

Many months of preparations and rehearsals by the theatre company Avalon Event and their cast of mainly Namibian actors resulted in an excellent premiere of the musical in September at the NTN, followed by 4 more shows at the NTN and Zoo Park Amphitheatre.

In October Avalon Event toured to Germany, where the “Friends 4eva” musical had its German premiere in Berlin at the Grips theatre. The premiere was opened by the German president Mr Horst Koehler and the Berlin Mayor Mr Klaus Wowereit. After several shows in Berlin, the show toured through Germany. The musical has been a success, with great media coverage in the German press, television and radio.

Athletics World Championships – p.art.ners in conjunction with the Namibian Embassy and the German Namibian Foundation organized the participation of the Namibian Kwaito musicians EES and GAZZA at the Day of Nations at the Brandenburger Tor P.art.ners has also sponsored 5 flights for the musicians and their dancers to Berlin. (Berlin, August 09).
